CHAPTER NINE

Ricky had woken up before me. Our relationship was fresh, yet I missed him when I woke up, as if I had never been able to live without it. This was the feeling an alpha gets when he's completely in love with his omega...

I took to the shower, freshening myself up. The sweat clinging to the mattress from our constant activity had left me feeling almost soggy, needing the shower.

The showerhead was weak, offering a lazy stream of cold water. I thought back about yesterday. Not even the news of Matt's death and the scattering of the pack was enough to dim the happiness I felt over knowing Ricky was pregnant.

Ricky. My Ricky.

I could sense the storm that was coming, though. There was no stopping the Bone Tribe now. In my head, I was convinced that resigning as alpha was the safest course, but now I was thinking up quick compromises that would allow me to put my omega and my unborn child first. We could dissolve the pack and surrender our land to the Tribe; we could offer ourselves to another pack and join them in return for protection; we could even just move to better, safer bearings.

The Dawning Moon could re-anchor itself elsewhere, one day becoming as proud and large as it had once been. After all, Ricky and I were going to have a child. We weren't going to stop at one, I knew. A resolve steeled inside me as I thought about having a large family, a pack so large we would never have to fear any threat.

But until that happened, I realized under the weak cold shower, I was still alpha of Dawning Moon.

That meant I had responsibilities. That meant I owed these people. Even Van and Ellie, whose membership in the pack was still so brief.

Just like Ricky.

I wiped myself off, and my ears pricked to attention as I made out the sound of an approaching car. I knew there was no need to worry once I figured out that it was a van — the familiar shudder and thrum of Matt's van.

Now I dressed quickly and walked outside. "Ricky," I called out. "Can you go peek through the windows to see if it's Matt's van? They're here."

Curious. Ricky didn't answer. I had a strange sense that he wasn't even in the cabin... but not because anything bad had happened. Nobody had kidnapped him in the night, surely.

Either way, I walked over to the door, bewildered, warily watching the van in case it had actually been taken over by my enemies in a bid to lure me out.

But it was Kenzie, Van, and Ellie, the surviving members of Matt's unfortunate assault on the Bone Tribe headquarters. They were solemn, and I could tell that all of them had spent a lot of time crying recently.

"Van," I greeted. "How'd you manage to join up with the rest?"

"Got on my goddamn hands and knees and crawled my way to Kenzie's hideout. Wasn't safe, wasn't going to be safe for long, so we moved around again.
